Vicious

Vicious is my first adult book!

It comes out in hardcover from Tor, September 24, 2013, and in paperback from Titan Books (UK), January 10th, 2014.

Vicious is kind of like a comic book without pictures, a violent twist on heroes and villains.

Here’s the official copy:

A masterful, twisted tale of ambition, jealousy, betrayal, and superpowers, set in a near-future world.

Victor and Eli started out as college roommates–brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong.
Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge but who will be left alive at the end?
In Vicious, V. E. Schwab brings to life a gritty comic-book-style world in vivid prose: a world where gaining superpowers doesn’t automatically lead to heroism, and a time when allegiances are called into question.

Just curious (because the blurb is awesome and I’m terribly excited for it), is the Eli in Vicious Eli Ever from the short fiction you wrote at Merry Fates so long ago? The piece was so grabbing then, I can only imagine how the novel would be if it is, in fact, him.

  2. Maja says:

I so, so, so LOVE this book! I’m serious if I say this is the best book I’ve read so far. Thank you so much for writing it and for being awesome!

  3. Kristin says:

Just finished Vicious and loved it! Will there be a sequel? Seemed like you left the possibility open…

  4. Babka says:

After reading the book, I can’t get it out of my head! (Not complaining). It was very well done and I am really lokoking forward to the sequel!

  5. Scott Conroe says:

Your plot that jumps around in time should have confused me … but it didn’t what a great way to provide backstory!

  6. Bianca/June Aurley says:

I’m late, I know. But I want to say one thing. I loved this book. I loved Vic’s attitude, cold but sweet with Syd. Serena, Eli, Mitch, June, Marce, Dom, Stell, Dol, Lyne, Angie … Everything. I loved everything. It was the first book of yours that I read. Then I read The City of Ghosts, then Vengerful, then This Savage Song, and now I am reading Our Dark Duet. I loved them all. It’s true what you say, that a book can only kill you if you get fond of it. Well … I already died several times with your books and your characters. I doubt if I will be an EO for all the times I died. Hahaha.
I’m 12 years old, and when I read Vicious, I started writing. Thanks to you I was a finalist in a literary contest. I am writing more than 14 stories and I feel that I am getting better as a writer, if I can call myself that. Thank you for being like that, for the simple fact of creating, because everything you believe I love. And you’re going to go further, Victoria, I trust you. Thank you for improving my adolescence with your stories. You are my favorite writer. I love you
