Okay, so it’s my turn to throw down in this Creepy Cake N Bake challenge!
Originally I was just going to make some spiders. Spiders are creepy, right? I had no idea HOW I was going to execute said spiders, so I got some supplies…A LOT of supplies…
I made up rice krispie balls…
…thinking I could cover them in chocolate for spider bodies…
When that didn’t work so well, I decided to cover them in icing and roll them in coconut I’d dyed black.
I added licorice legs, but while it looked kind of cool…
…it was a MESS to work with, and I didn’t really want to make 2345643 more of them.
Feeling uninspired, and following a throw down from Brenna (of the red velvet cake heart that is so anatomically correct I suspect she made a trip to an OR), I started over. I didn’t want to abandon my spiders, so I decided to make a NEST out of spun sugar. Basically, I wanted to make white cotton candy from scratch.
The only problem? I don’t own a cotton candy maker.
BUT THANK GOD FOR YOUTUBE TUTORIALS. AND NEWSPAPER.
The result?
And then I made some chocolate spiders…
And then, after baking up a sheet cake base, I constructed my nest and put the chocolate spiders in it!
And that’s all I’ve got!
Be sure to leave a comment below so I get points for risking my life with boiling sugar.

*high fives* And that’s totally what kitchens are for!
Oh my gosh- I love the web! Those spiders creep me out with their little eyes. But I’d still eat them- they look delicious!
I can safely say that the spiders were indeed delicious 🙂 The web, not so much! Unless you like tasty tasty glass.
Well done! I’m impressed by your dedication! The final result is great. I love the nest 🙂 heidi (at) yabibliophile (dot) com
Haha, definitely not so great at admitting defeat :p Especially when there’s sugar involved.
Oh! That is Rather Alarmingly Realistic! I’m amazed you made cotton candy at home — fantastic job!
Why thank you!! It was a challenge, but so fun!
One of my most frequently recurring childhood nightmares was insects and spiders crawling out of my pillowcase and all over my face. So thank you for helping me conquer my fear by imagining them as tasty chocolate confections.

I’m so glad I could interpret your fears in an edible medium :p
The twitter comments about the boiling sugar now make sense. Love how the end result turned out!

Yes, this is what I was referring to. The sugar, it tried to kill me! Or at least maim.
Holy cow. I want some of those!
:DD
Omigawd WOW!!! This is beautiful and incredibly impressive! My husband is afraid of spiders and I-I-I might just have to do this to him for his birthday.
*hee hee hee*
Thanks for the inspirational chocolate-sugar-chills!
Why thank you, Dawn!! And you should totally do it, I had SO much fun!
This is fantastic!!! It’s definitely creepy (I don’t mind spiders in general, but a NEST of spiders? YIKES!!!). Your spun sugar is an uber-accomplishment. I wouldn’t have thought of that and you’re very brave for attempting it. Congratulations on such an impressive creation!
The idea of a nest is definitely 25643 times creepier than the idea of spiders :p
Woah, seriously impressive, V! That’s gorgeous.
You make most human beings look seriously inadequate.
Now I want chocolate.
Haha, aww, thanks Pamela! And you’re so silly.
That is so awesome!! 😀
Thanks, Kare!!
God, V. That is SO gross. By which I mean I LOVE IT!
I fear it’s no bleeding heart, but I tried!!
Very very creepy, and for once spiders look tasty…I love it!
Wow spiders! A tasty treat!
Haha the spiders, yes, but the spun sugar turned out like DEADLY SHARDS OF LOVELY GLASS.
I am so BEYOND impressed!!! Well done! Even if it did attack you! 😀
Why thank you, Andye! It was totally worth the scars 😉
LOVE.
MWAH.
*hides chocolate spiders around your house*
Dear sweet keebus, that is HIDEOUS. Well done!!
Hehehe. I mean, it’s no zombaby.
SO COOL! Not very creepy, but extremely cool! Those spiders actually look kind of cute 🙂
I know, in the end I’m just not so good at creep or gore. I want things a little lovely.
Insane and delightful. I bow to you…
My two favorite things!!
You blink and you think, weren’t there seven before?
A spider’s decamped from its sugar encasement.
That’s silly, you say; but a week from today
there’s a candyfloss colony crowding your basement.
This. This is the best thing ever.
You are brilliant!! *bows* *is not worthy*
Stacey Jay
Hahaha awww, thanks, Stacey. I clearly am not so good in the giving up department.
I…am speechless.
;)))
omg that looks AWESOME!
Thanks, Ashelynn!
Wait a minute! Cotton candy is sugar?!?
Hahahaha.
Wait, that WAS a joke, right?
Victoria…I am blown away by your choco spideys and spun sugar ‘nest’!!! I don’t think I would have the umph these days to keep on trying as you did & create my own spun sugar from scratch!!! Impressive!!!
Kudos to the Spider Queen!!!
–Cecilia H.
Why thanks, Cecilia!! I clearly have a problem admitting defeat :p
Did you need my email typed in my message??? Duh???

Thanks!!!
Bravo! I saw on Twitter that the cotton candy attacked you, but you fought back, with amazing results.
I couldn’t go down without a fight!
AMAZING! I never would have had the idea or the courage to tackle the spun sugar nest project – I can’t believe how perfectly it turned out… And it looks super tasty too. 😀
Oh, and writingonalimb [at] gmail
All thanks to Youtube tutorials, copious amounts of newspaper, and bad judgment :p
That is amazing creepy cake so many crawlers
Ugh, spiders are creepy, even chocolate ones. Awesome idea, it turned out great! I could totally see it as the centerpiece at a Halloween party!
I hope I get another chance to do this. The cotton candy was SO messy but SO much fun!!
That web rocks! And Nat says so too ;0)
Why thank you, to you both!
That spider web is pretty amazing.
*takes a bow*
OMG I looove this one! Too cool for words.
:DDD
I LOVE THIS. It is so awesome…it is my favorite! But now I want to go NOM NOM NOM on it. *goes in search of lunch*
Thanks, JP!!!!
IMPRESSIVE!
I love how much work you put into this ❤ It is so you, LOL.
Thanks, Sonia!! I am perhaps just a little too competitive when it comes to sweets :p
I’m astounded that you can make cotton candy without a cotton candy maker. And then that you actually did it and risked your life with boiling sugar (I’ve been burned by it before . . . though not while making cotton candy. I can only imagine the horrors of spinning boiling sugar . . . *shudder*)
You can’t see me, but I’m giving you a standing ovation. =)
You totally get points for risking your life! Boiling sugar is waaay not fun to play with! And you get points for persistance! BTW…spiders=creepy in my book!!
I love this idea!
