Spreading the Awesome – The Graveyard Book

So this has been a fun weekend. Nashville’s status has been changed from CITY to LAKE after major storms/flooding. That is NOT awesome.

But this post is titled SPREAD THE AWESOME (an event organized by the lovely Elana Johnson).

And so I shall endeavor to do that.

Neil Gaiman.

Just the name makes some authors a little swoony. It evokes dark corners, phantom cities, button eyes, nightmares and wolves and gods and things that go bump. And graveyards.

The Graveyard Book is one of my absolute favorites. To me, it was the perfect combination of Gaiman’s talents. His wicked imagination paired with an incredibly distilled, and wonderfully realized story. It’s one of those books that slips in behind you like a second shadow. Some books cling, or dig their nails in, or nag, but not this one. It just lingers. You read it and it’s there and it never fully leaves.

Read it. It’s worth it. It’s lovely and dark and seemingly simple but not at all. It’s clever and touching and I hope that if you do read it, it will slip in to your life, too. It might be subtle, but that’s okay. I don’t really know how to explain my love of the book more than that. I don’t want to bog it down with analysis, try to excavate reasons. Instead, I’ll simply say – read it.

Great choice. The Graveyard Book tied with Kathi Appelt’s The Underneath as my favorite book last year.

It was definitely in the top for last year, and made the list of top for all time for me, though I have a curiously hard time explaining the WHY of it. I just LOVE THIS BOOK.

I loved this book. Love love love Gaiman’s take on growing up with the undead (but admit to kinda crying when he had a “Dance Macabray,” too, darnit). Think THE JUNGLE BOOK meets Tim Burton as only Gaiman can do it.
    Great pick and awesome post!!

    love Neil Gaiman…great choice

  11. Love this book. (And Neil Gaiman does make me swooney.) I listened to the audiobook, which I think won the best one of the year or something like that. Gaiman narrates, and his voice makes it even more special.
