I read Susanna Clarke’s Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell a while back, and have had ridiculous book love for her ever since.
Her style is ripe with English formality and yet oddly fluid (it might be that my mom’s British, and so the syntax feels right, natural). The length of the book is not for the shy or those who only like a quick read, but in my opinion it’s well worth it. Set in 19th century England, Clarke sets up a world in which magic is both incredible and gorgeous and yet mundane, a place complete with other worldly things and military men, of adventure and some of the most ingenious footnotes I’ve ever read.
And now, two years later I’m reading The Ladies of Grace Adieu and remembering why I adore this author.
Check her out! I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
